Fix that drip – turn a small leak into big savings

November 27, 2025

A single dripping tap doesn't just waste water, it wastes your money. According to the Australian Government's Your Home guide, one leaking tap can waste more than 20,000 litres each year. That's enough to fill a small backyard pool, and it's costing you over $60 annually based on average state water tariffs.

Got a few drips around the house, or a toilet cistern that runs too long? Those small leaks quickly become expensive problems, but they're also the easiest wins for your budget.

The fix is simple (and affordable)

Most leaking taps are caused by worn washers, seals, or O-rings all quick, low-cost repairs. Many homeowners can replace a washer themselves in minutes, or a plumber can fix multiple taps in under an hour.

Quick wins that protect your wallet:

  • Turn taps off firmly (but don't over tighten that damages seals)

  • Replace worn washers or cartridges at the first sign of a drip

  • Check outdoor taps and irrigation systems regularly, especially after rain

  • Choose water-efficient fittings rated 3 stars or higher under the WELS (Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards) scheme

Save water, save money, build resilience

Stopping leaks doesn't just cut your bills, it reduces strain on local water systems and strengthens Australia's long-term water security. When every household fixes their drips, we all benefit from more reliable, affordable water supplies.

Your action step: Check your taps this week. If you spot a drip, fix it fast. Your home shouldn't be letting precious water or your hard-earned money go down the drain.
